How to Walk Your Dog in Chicago

Last Updated: 3/17/2019 Here at Sparky Steps, we know how excited your pup gets when you sing out “do you want to go for a walk?” That’s why our dog-walking team consists of only the most compassionate, enthusiastic and safety-oriented people. There are many great things to see and do throughout Chicago, which begs a very serious question: “How can I make sure my dog and I have the best walk possible?” Don’t worry, we’re here to help!
  1. Map out your adventure

To ensure the best possible walk, plan out the route you and your furry friend are going to explore together! If it’s the summertime, try and choose a path by the lakefront, and let your pup cool off in the water. There are also plenty of dog-friendly parks and other places throughout the city, stop by and let your canine companion make new friends! Check out some of the destinations here!

  1. Check the weather

We all know that Chicago weather is gruesome and sometimes unpredictable. Always check the forecast before setting out! In extreme temperatures, ensure that it’s safe and comfortable for your dog to go on a walk. If the ground is too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your puppy’s paws!

  1. Make Safety Your Number One Priority

Be sure that you obey the rules of the road, especially at crosswalks. Look before crossing the street and keep a close eye on your dog. Canines will rush off with excitement if they see something that piques their interest, and it’s important that you ensure they aren’t putting themselves in danger. Plus, it’s crucial to always know your surroundings and to avoid constantly checking your phone or becoming distracted. These are just some of the many ways that you can keep you and your pup safe and happy!

  1. Grab a bite to eat

Hey, you’re in the Windy City! We’re well known for our wide array of delicious food. Get yourself a famous Chicago dog (don’t forget the relish), or a slice of cheesy deep dish pizza! For other options check out the food trucks, they always have something for everyone! Be sure to bring some treats for your canine companion as well!

  1. Pick up after your furry friend

Make sure that you bring plenty of bags to pick up after your dog. Let’s keep Chicago as spotless as possible!

  1. Share your walk with us!

We’d love to hear about the adventures you and your dog take. Share a picture of your dog on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter (or all three) and tag us! Use the hashtag #SparkandBark and #SparkySteps as well.

If you don't have a dog then go visit your nearest shelter and walk one of theirs. Visit https://sparkysteps.com/pages/social-mission to find out more information!
