A little Edgewater history
Edgewater was dreamed up by one man with a sales pitch. In 1885, a Philadelphia tobacco salesman named John Lewis Cochran bought a stretch of lakefront in what was then Lake View Township and built Chicago's first fully planned suburb, with paved streets, electric streetlights, and modern sewers when much of the city had none. He even named the streets after stops on Philadelphia's Main Line, which is why Edgewater still has a Bryn Mawr, a Berwyn, and a Thorndale today.
Once the elevated train arrived in 1908, apartment buildings filled in around Cochran's mansions and the lakefront turned glamorous. The pink Edgewater Beach Hotel opened in 1916 and drew the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and Babe Ruth to its lakeside ballrooms. Its sunset-pink sister building, the Edgewater Beach Apartments, still anchors the north end of Lake Shore Drive. After a mid-century dip, residents fought for their own identity and won: in 1980 Edgewater split from Uptown to become the newest of Chicago's 77 official community areas.
You can still walk the Lakefront Trail past Foster and Kathy Osterman beaches, admire the terracotta facades of the Bryn Mawr Historic District, and eat your way down Clark Street through Swedish, Ethiopian, and Middle Eastern Edgewater. It is a true water's-edge neighborhood, green and diverse, and a wonderful place to be a cat.
Edgewater is a cat town too
Edgewater earns its name: it sits right at the edge of the water, and for as long as there have been boats tied up at a water's edge, there have been cats earning their keep aboard them. Ship's cats kept the rats out of the rope and the rations, and sailors counted them as good luck for a safe voyage home. A neighborhood built along the lakeshore is a fitting place to remember that cats have always been working animals as much as companions. The same instincts that make your indoor cat pounce on a feather wand once kept entire ships fed and afloat.
Famous cats, with a seafaring twist
The most decorated cat in history was a stray who started out, fittingly, at the water's edge. In 1948, a scrawny young cat was found wandering a Hong Kong dockyard and smuggled aboard the British navy ship HMS Amethyst to deal with its rats. The crew named him Simon. A year later, the ship was caught in heavy shellfire on China's Yangtze River, and Simon was badly wounded by a blast, yet he kept the rats away from the crew's dwindling food supplies and lifted morale through more than three months trapped on the river. For that, Simon was awarded the Dickin Medal, the animal version of the Victoria Cross, and to this day he remains the only cat ever to receive it. Not bad for a dockside stray who simply liked being near the water. 🐾
Michael's first cat: Delilah
Sparky Steps is named for our founder Michael's rescue dog, but his love of animals started earlier, with a cat named Delilah. She was his first, and the one who taught him what it means to share your home, and your whole routine, with a creature who has opinions of her own. The patience, attention, and respect we bring to every cat we look after traces straight back to her.
"Delilah was a good cat, always wanted pets and to relax with you while we watched tv, liked to play, and really an indoor cat. Although one day, an outdoor cat, we named him Kevin, began to meow all the time at her from outside. My cat would constantly meow back at him through the window. One day, she snuck out and left our house to be with him. We suddenly had an outdoor cat with a mate. They were happy together, inseparable, really. But Delilah always returned for food and friendly greetings to check in on us. I missed having her around, but I was glad to see she found a life partner. She was a good cat."
