A little Ravenswood history
Ravenswood was one of Chicago's first commuter suburbs, built on a sales pitch and a train deal. In 1868, a group of investors called the Ravenswood Land Company bought 194 acres of farmland and woods about eight miles north of the city, then struck a deal with the railroad for a station so well-to-do buyers could ride out to their large, leafy lots. They even put up a hotel so prospects could visit before they bought. The catch: the developers skipped the sewers and sidewalks, and Ravenswood only got proper city services once Chicago annexed it in 1889.
When the Ravenswood elevated line, today's Brown Line, arrived in 1907, the neighborhood boomed, and the grand Victorians were joined by bungalows, two-flats, and courtyard buildings. The factories that once lined the railroad tracks, including the original home of Abbott Laboratories, founded here in 1888, have since become one of the city's most creative corridors, full of artist studios, makers, and the breweries and distillery of Malt Row.
You can still wander the century-old homes of the Ravenswood Historic District, catch the Ravenswood Art Walk, and sample your way down Malt Row. It is one of the North Side's leafiest, most creative neighborhoods, and a wonderful place to be a cat.
Ravenswood is a cat town too
Here is a fun one for a neighborhood named Ravenswood: local legend says the name came from the ravens that supposedly roosted in its woods, and the most famous raven in all of literature was written by a man who, as it happens, was utterly devoted to his cat. Edgar Allan Poe gave us "The Raven," but at home he kept a tortoiseshell cat who meant the world to him. Although one day, an outdoor cat, we named him Kevin, began to meow all the time at her from outside. My cat would constantly meow back at him through the window. One day, she snuck out and left our house to be with him. We suddenly had an outdoor cat with a mate. They were happy together, inseparable, really. But Delilah always returned for food and friendly greetings to check in on us. I missed having her around, but I was glad to see she found a life partner. She was a good cat."
