A little Uptown history
Before the trains came, Uptown was farmland settled by German and Swedish immigrants, then a breezy summer resort where downtowners escaped the city heat. The neighborhood even took its name from a local landmark, the Uptown Store. When the elevated railroad reached Wilson and Broadway in 1900, everything changed.
By the 1920s, Uptown had become the Loop's glamorous little sibling, a shopping and entertainment district so grand that its main street was renamed Broadway after New York's. Essanay Studios on Argyle made Uptown an early capital of American film, where Charlie Chaplin and Gloria Swanson shot silent pictures before Hollywood took over. The Uptown Theatre opened in 1925 as the largest movie palace in Chicago, the Aragon Ballroom followed in 1926, and the Green Mill poured jazz right through Prohibition, complete with a booth said to belong to Al Capone.
That history is still standing. You can catch a show at the Riviera or the Aragon, eat your way down Argyle's Vietnamese and Chinese restaurants, walk the lakefront at Montrose Beach, and hop the Red Line downtown in minutes. It is one of the most diverse, layered neighborhoods in the city, and a wonderful place to be a cat.
Uptown is a cat town too
Uptown is the birthplace of one of the country's most important cat institutions. In 1971, a small group of volunteers founded Tree House Humane Society in Uptown, eventually settling into a converted row house on Carmen Avenue. It was one of the first cageless, no-kill cat shelters anywhere, taking in the cats other shelters turned away: the sick, the injured, the three-legged, the ones nobody else would. Over five decades it has found homes for more than 25,000 cats.
Tree House also helped change how an entire city treats its cats. Its Cats at Work program places spayed, vaccinated outdoor cats at homes and businesses around Chicago, where they handle rodent control the natural way, no poison required. That work helped pave the way for Cook County's 2007 ordinance protecting managed cat colonies. Chicago has topped the national list of rattiest cities for years, which quietly makes its cats some of the hardest-working residents in town. Tree House outgrew the old Uptown row house and moved into a purpose-built, eco-friendly shelter in 2017, but its roots are pure Uptown.
Famous cats, with a Chicago twist
Long before Grumpy Cat and a billion phone videos, the most famous cat in America was a Chicago shelter cat. In 1968, an animal trainer named Bob Martwick spotted a charming orange tabby called Lucky at the Hinsdale Humane Society in the Chicago suburbs, renamed him Morris, and made him the face of 9Lives. Dreamed up by Chicago's own Leo Burnett agency, Morris starred in dozens of commercials as the world's most finicky cat and spent the rest of his career promoting shelter adoption. A rescued local cat became a household name, the same kind of cat who might be napping in an Uptown window right now.
There is an Uptown connection to feline fame, too. The same silent-film era that put Essanay Studios on Argyle gave the world its first animated superstar, Felix the Cat, who was the biggest cartoon on the planet decades before Mickey Mouse.
