A little North Center history
North Center is one of Chicago's oldest North Side neighborhoods, and for most of the 1800s it was open prairie and farmland along the Chicago River. After the Great Fire of 1871, German, Swedish, and Irish families settled here as truck farmers, hauling their produce down what is now Lincoln Avenue, once known as Little Fort Road. When new fire codes created huge demand for brick, the clay along the riverbanks turned North Center into a neighborhood of busy brickyards, and the arrival of the Ravenswood 'L', today's Brown Line, brought the streetcar commuters who filled these blocks with the greystones and two-flats you still see today.
For sixty-four years, North Center was also home to pure magic. From 1904 to 1967, Riverview Park sprawled across the land at Belmont and Western, billed as the largest amusement park in the world. Generations of Chicagoans rode The Bobs, braved the parachute drop, and spun on a giant hand-carved carousel until the park closed in 1967. A shopping plaza, DePaul College Prep, and a police station stand on the spot now, but ask almost any lifelong Chicagoan and you will still get a Riverview story.
Today North Center is all leafy calm: the greystones of St. Ben's, the shops of Roscoe Village, the Saturday farmers market at North Center Town Square, and the green ribbon of Horner Park and the river trail. It is a neighborhood built for walking, which suits us and your dog just fine.
