5 Goal-Setting Resolutions for You and Your Dog
Goal setting isn't just for January 1st! Whether you are kicking off a brand new year, welcoming the spring, or just looking to hit the "reset" button on your daily routine, it is never a bad time to establish healthy habits. Here at Sparky Steps, we love looking back at how much our incredible pack of Chicagoland clients has grown, but we are always looking forward to making the months ahead even more productive, healthy, and fun.
To keep you and your pup on the right track, we put our heads together to come up with five fantastic, highly attainable resolutions that will benefit both ends of the leash!
1. Commit to Consistent Exercise
Pups need to stay in shape, too! When the weather gets freezing in the Windy City, it's easy to get lazy. And when the humid Chicago summer hits, the couch looks awfully inviting. But consistent, year-round exercise is vital for your dog's cardiovascular health and joint mobility.
Try to develop a strict, frequent walk schedule for you and your dog. Hit the 606 Trail, walk the Lakefront, or explore a new neighborhood. (Struggling to find the time? Please feel free to reach out to us to schedule a daily mid-day dog walk. We are always more than happy to help get those canine steps in!)
2. Elevate Your Pup's Nutrition
There are so many great food choices around Chicago. We can’t get enough of deep-dish pizza or Chicago-style hot dogs, but it’s always beneficial to expand your palette with healthy alternatives—and the exact same goes for our canine companions!
Are you still feeding your dog the exact same kibble from five years ago? Research the ingredients in your dog’s food and determine if it is still the healthiest choice for their current age and activity level. You can also resolve to add healthy, fresh toppers to their bowl, like dog-safe vegetables, blueberries, or pure pumpkin puree.
3. Learn a New Trick or Skill
It is the perfect time to try something new. While you might take up a hobby you’ve always been interested in learning (like sewing, cooking, or playing the piano), don't forget to challenge your dog's brain, too!
Dogs of all ages can absolutely be taught new tricks. Mental stimulation is just as tiring for a dog as physical exercise. Work on advanced obedience, teach them how to "spin," train them to clean up their own toys, or buy a canine puzzle feeder to challenge their daily foraging instincts.
4. Travel, Travel, Travel!
Chicago is undeniably one of the most beautiful cities in the world. But it’s never a bad thing to pack up the car and expand your horizons! Resolve to take a pet-friendly weekend getaway this year.
You don't have to fly to have a great time. Consider taking a road trip to Starved Rock State Park for some incredible dog-friendly hiking, rent a pet-friendly cabin in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, or take a scenic drive to the beaches of South Haven, Michigan. Your dog will love exploring the new sights and smells of the Midwest!
5. Expand Your Pack and Make New Friends
Dogs are naturally pack animals, and socializing is great for their confidence! There are countless places throughout the Chicagoland area to make new friends, both human and canine. Here are three ways to get social:
- Hit the Patios: Take your dog to some of the amazing pet-friendly bars and restaurant patios across Chicago.
- Visit the DFA: Check out the official, fenced-in Chicago Dog Parks (DFAs) to let them run off-leash safely.
- Adopt a Sibling: Ready to truly expand your family? Make a resolution to give a shelter animal a second chance! Check out our guide to Chicago animal shelters to find your next best friend.
However you choose to better yourself in the coming months is okay with us! We hope this list provides our clients and community with some inspiring ideas. What are your major goals for your pet this year? Be sure to let us know on social media by using the hashtag #SparkySteps!
