Sacred Dogs

The Shih Tzu originated in Tibet approximately  thousand years ago or more, making this an ancient breed with an illustrious history, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). The dogs arrived in China, likely as gifts to royalty. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Chinese Dowager Empress Tzu-Hsi (also spelled Cixi) considered the breed a sacred one, according to Pedigree. The breed name actually translates to “little lion” in Mandarin, hence the dog’s mighty nickname.

Shih Tzus made their entrance to the United States in the 1940s and 1950s, and today they are an extremely popular toy breed. The AKC officially recognized the Shih Tzu in 1969, according to The Spruce Pets.

Tiny But Mighty

As a toy breed, the Lion Dog has a diminutive stature. Shih Tzus weight from nine to 16 pounds, according to the AKC. Though small, these dogs are incredibly agile. They are known for winning agility competitions, according to the AKC.

As is common with smaller breeds, Shih Tzus have a fairly long canine lifespan. The breed can live anywhere from 10 to 18 years, according to the AKC.

The Shih Tzu Coat

The Shih Tzu’s coat is probably its most distinctive feature, often resembling a mane. It can be incredibly long, flowing to the floor in a smooth sheet. Many owners give the fur a little style with a bow at the crown of the head. Shih Tzus come in many different colors, including black, white, and gold. You’ll often see these pups sporting combination of hues.

As you can imagine, a long coat like this is not low-maintenance. You will need to break out the brush every day to keep the coat smooth, shiny, and free of tangles. Many owners enlist the help of a professional groomer to keep their Shih Tzu’s coat clean and healthy.

At Home with the Lion Dog

As a small pup, the Shih Tzu does not have an enormous activity requirement, but it is still a good idea to give them an outlet for their athletic abilities. Be sure to take your dog for regular walks, and schedule indoor playtime.
