The Ultimate Chicago Guide: 5 Fun Things to Do With Your Pup This Spring
Spring is finally here in Chicago! After enduring another long, freezing Midwest winter of quick dashes into the backyard and abbreviated, shivering walks, your pup is surely as anxious to get back outside as you are.
We here at Sparky Steps know that winter cabin fever is incredibly real for both humans and hounds. Now that the season of new beginnings is upon us, the snow has melted, and the sun is shining, it is time to get back out into the city. We’ve created a curated list of fun, engaging things you and your dog can do to celebrate the season!
1. Hit the Trails for a Spring Hike
If you think you’re tired of walking the exact same snowy neighborhood route, imagine how your pup feels! A dog's brain is heavily stimulated by new scents. Why not take them someplace new and refreshing? Exploring nature trails lets your pooch’s nose run wild with all the native plants that are finally blooming.
You don't have to drive far to find incredible nature. The Forest Preserves of Cook County offer hundreds of miles of dog-friendly, paved, and unpaved trails. Spots like LaBagh Woods or the North Branch Trail are perfect for an afternoon adventure. Just make sure to keep your pup on a leash and check for ticks when you get home!
2. Socialize at a Local Dog Park
We know your dog loves spending time with you, but after months of indoor isolation, they are probably desperate to make some new friends. Dog parks are the perfect place for your pet to safely mingle, burn off excess winter weight, and practice their social cues.
Take the leash off and let your pup run around! Chicago has an incredible network of official Dog Friendly Areas (DFAs). Head over to Wiggly Field in Lincoln Park, or check out the official Chicago Park District DFA list to find a completely fenced-in oasis right in your neighborhood. (Note: Make sure your dog's DFA tag and vaccinations are up to date before entering!)
3. Grab a Bite at a Dog-Friendly Patio or Brewery
Warmer weather means patio season has officially arrived in Chicago! You are going to want to get out and kick back with your friends, so why not bring your pup along? There is an ever-growing list of incredible outdoor restaurants, cafes, and breweries that would love to serve you and your furry friend.
Many local breweries allow leashed, well-behaved dogs in their outdoor seating areas. To find the best local spots that offer water bowls and pup cups, check out this fantastic map of dog-friendly Chicago patios and restaurants from Eater Chicago.
4. Make a Splash at the Dog Beach
If the weather is warm enough and Lake Michigan isn't too frigid, let your pup paddle around in the waves! Bring a Chuckit! launcher, some floating tennis balls, and high-value treats for an epic game of waterfront fetch.
We are incredibly lucky to have the famous Montrose Dog Beach right in our backyard. It is arguably one of the best dog beaches in the entire country, offering acres of sand and shallow water for dogs to splash through off-leash.
5. Throw a Spring Backyard Doggy Party
Hey, all of the neighborhood dogs are itching to get outside too! If you are lucky enough to have a backyard, break out the hose, set up a dog-safe kiddie pool, fire up the grill, and invite your friends and their dogs over.
After spending all winter cooped up indoors, everyone deserves some time to catch up, stretch their legs, and enjoy the fresh air. Just make sure you provide plenty of fresh drinking water and shaded areas so the pups don't overheat as the sun gets stronger.
A Quick Spring Safety Reminder!
As you head back out into the tall grass and nature trails, remember that spring is the start of flea, tick, and heartworm season. Double-check with your vet to ensure your dog is on a reliable preventative medication before you hit the parks!
